I’ve just re-read my words towards the end, ‘And this music rings in our eyes’ – I don’t think music rings in anyone’s eyes – I meant ears! It’s just as well my salvation is not dependent on never saying anything daft!

I enjoyed reading that and I think you have explained well the Biblical view of ‘receiving the Holy Spirit’ first. I think in a discussion with Mormons on this topic, they would try to create a perceived separation between the Holy Ghost’s affirmation if their teachings prior to baptism and then post-baptism receiving the ‘gift of the Holy Ghost’ as a permanent companion from then on. Of course as you point out, the problem with all of that is this makes everything very ‘man-dependent’ rather than depending on the actions of God.

I liked the way you tied in the theme of music at the end of your post too. May I also share a great hymn, found in the LDS hymnbook, which contains the real saving gospel, but which is sung probably by many Mormons without realising the full implication of the words:

“I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me,
Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me.
I tremble to know that for me he was crucified,
That for me, a sinner, he suffered, he bled and died.

[Chorus]
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me
Enough to die for me!
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!

2. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine,
That he should extend his great love unto such as I,
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.

3. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt!
Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget?
No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat,
Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet.”
