Culture does, indeed, shape us in ways we don’t always recognise. When culture predominates in a church it reflects the culture too well and proof texting is all there is left. That, or repentance.

Culture plays an important part in understanding religion and Mormonism is no different. Thanks for writing this.

What is also a useful lesson, is that we must be careful in how we read the bible. Every verse a paragraph, and every sentence a revelation to be used to build a talk to a doctrine is a folly. Unfortunately, it also leads to Mormons and Christians talking past each other. The cross saves the weak and the privileged alike and through it we are made holy, all who believe, that is the Gospel. Mormons can proof text all they like, but the Gospel is still the Gospel.
